This week we’ve been reflecting on the paradigm shift that occurred in hip hop ten years ago. The year 2007 was the year Kanye outsold 50 Cent and the rap game changed forever. But Graduation and Curtis were not the only significant releases of 2007. That was also the year of Shop Boyz’ “Party Like a Rockstar” and Soulja Boy’s “Crank Dat” and Hurricane Chris’s “A Bay Bay” and UGK’s “International Players Anthem.” And then, amidst all that, an unlikely masterpiece leaked onto message boards from somewhere in California: Blu and Exile’s Below the Heavens.
Ten years later the San Pedro MC and the Orange County producer —currently in the midst of 42-date 10th-anniversary tour—are now announcing the October 20 release of a new project: In The Beginning: Before The Heavens, the prequel to their 2007 underground classic Below The Heavens.
Comprising unreleased tracks from the original Below The Heavens sessions, In The Beginning picks right up with that same energy, and features appearances from Aloe Blacc, Co$$, Donel Smokes, and Blame One.
“We planted the seeds of creativity and grew about 40 plants,” Exile says of the release. “We picked the ones that we thought were the best for an album, but that didn’t mean that the other flowers weren’t beautiful. I’m super happy to re-release [In The Beginning] to people and have it actually get some attention that it definitely deserves. It’s amazing.”
I hope your all excited as we are for this Album! Check the first single “Constellations” below:
The last time the DS crew got together was one of the best Hip Hop shows to bless Los Angeles in a long time. With appearances by Fashawn, Aloe black, Blu , Exile, Choosey , Dag Savage, Dilated Peoples, Dom Kennedy, Everlast of House Of Pain, and the Goat himself, Nas came out to truly make this a memorable moment. Blame One has linked up with the San Diego production duo, Harry Apollo and JonJ, to create the raw and gritty Hip Hop group, Big Block Silvers. Harry Apollo serves as the main producer while JonJ brings live instrumentation to Harry’s production, resulting in a lively aesthetic. For their first release, they’ve shared a fresh track from their forthcoming EP, BOLD. Titled “Crime In The City,” it’s an exciting introduction to the project, which will be followed up with remixes from Exile, J57 and People Under The Stairs’ Thes One. BOLD is scheduled for a February 24 release via Exile’s Dirty Science x J57’s FiveSe7en Music. Meet the new group above and pre-order the EP here.
After 2 mix tapes and a classic album, producer extraordinaire Exile and mic smith, Johaz drop a song from their upcoming 4th project (Volition) as DAG SAVAGE to kick off their European tour with fellow crew mate Blu.
This song (What Makes a Mutha Fucka) shows what makes Johaz so damn fresh or rather what makes him a force to be reckoned with in Hip Hop. Along with a hard menacing production from Exile and fellow DS CREW mate Cashus King, who supports his crew with a hook and crazy acapella verse at the end. Stay tuned for whats to come from these cats, and be sure to catch them on the road if you are in Europe this February 2017.
